STAR WARS Zero Company Specializations & Weapon Classes Explained

All eight standard Specializations, their battlefield roles, and how weapon range and AP cost should influence your choice.

Quick answer

There are eight standard Specializations: Assault, Gunslinger, Heavy, Medic, Scoundrel, Scout, Sharpshooter, and Soldier. Choose by squad role, then pair the role with a weapon class whose range and AP cost support that job.

The eight standard Specializations

EA lists eight standard Specializations: Assault, Gunslinger, Heavy, Medic, Scoundrel, Scout, Sharpshooter, and Soldier. Each defines an Operator's role and includes an Ultimate ability, a Standard ability, and passive effects. Some powerful actions use the shared Advantage resource instead of normal AP.

Pick a role before a name

Assault rewards mobility and pressure at close to medium range. Gunslinger focuses on quick ranged attacks and multi-target offense. Heavy is the durable frontline option. Medic protects campaign endurance through healing and recovery. Scoundrel creates critical openings and flexible assists. Scout generates information and team-wide tactical value. Sharpshooter is the long-range precision role. Soldier is the straightforward all-round combat choice.

For a first campaign, choose a Specialization because the squad needs its role—not because its ability names look strongest in isolation. A team full of damage specialists can struggle to create safe angles, recover from injuries, or hold an objective.

Understand authored and custom Operators

EA says Hawks and Custom Operators can choose or change Specializations. Authored Operators may have assigned Talents, and some authored characters have Specializations that cannot be changed. Check the Personnel screen before planning a build around a change the character does not allow.

Match the weapon class to AP economy

Weapon classes differ in range, damage, critical behavior, and AP cost. A cheaper shot can leave enough AP to move or use an ability, while a heavier weapon may consume most of a turn. Compare the weapon's optimal range to the Specialization's job.

EA's beginner-oriented pairings include Soldier or Assault with a Blaster Rifle for an approachable start, Sharpshooter with a Longarm Blaster for precision, and mobile roles such as Assault or Gunslinger with a lower-cost Blaster Pistol. These are starting points, not permanent rules.

A balanced squad can pair a Heavy or Assault frontline with a Medic, Scout or Scoundrel support role and one dedicated ranged finisher. If the mission emphasizes defense, prioritize cover control and Overwatch. If it emphasizes movement or extraction, reduce slow, high-AP commitments and bring more mobility.

Later progression can add another Specialization, according to EA's current guide. Plan combinations around complementary jobs: a Scout that creates Advantage, a Sharpshooter that converts a safe angle into a kill, or a Heavy that keeps pressure away from vulnerable support units.

Avoid three common mistakes

Do not choose only by listed damage. Do not ignore weapon AP cost. Do not assume every authored Operator can be rebuilt freely. The best class decision is the one that gives the whole squad a reliable turn sequence.
