How to Respec and Change Specialization in STAR WARS Zero Company

Where Change Specialization appears, what it refunds, which Operators may be restricted, and what to review after a respec.

Quick answer

After Change Specialization unlocks, use The Den’s Personnel screen, open an eligible Operator’s Focus Tree, select Change Specialization, confirm the refund, and reassign the returned Focus Points. Some authored Operators have restrictions.

When respec becomes available

Current launch reporting places Change Specialization early in the campaign, around Cycle 3. Once available, open The Den, go to Personnel, select the Operator, open the Focus Tree, and choose Change Specialization.

What the change refunds

PC Gamer's launch guide reports that changing Specialization is free and refunds Focus Points spent in the relevant tree. The top Talent for some story characters is treated differently, so inspect the refund preview before confirming. EA's official class guide also confirms that Hawks and Custom Operators can choose or change Specializations, while some authored Operators have restrictions.

Step-by-step

  1. Return to The Den after the feature becomes available.
  2. Open Personnel and choose Hawks or another eligible Operator.
  3. Open the Focus Tree.
  4. Select Change Specialization.
  5. Compare the new role, ability package, compatible weapon plan, and the displayed refund.
  6. Confirm the change, then reassign refunded Focus Points.
  7. Review equipment before launching the next mission.

What cannot always be changed

Do not assume every authored character is fully editable. EA says some authored Operators have assigned Talents and some have Specializations that cannot be changed. If the button is absent, first confirm whether the character is restricted rather than assuming the save is broken.

When to respec

Change Specialization when the squad lacks a role, when a weapon's AP cost no longer fits the Operator's turn, or when a later recruit has made two Operators redundant. It is also useful before a difficult mission that clearly rewards long-range control, mobility, healing, or frontline durability.

Avoid constant changes after every mission. A respec is most valuable when it solves a defined problem and you have enough equipment to support the new role.

Rebuild the whole turn, not only the tree

After changing class, review weapon class, utility item, expected AP sequence, squad bonds, and who generates or spends Advantage. A Sharpshooter carrying the wrong-range weapon or a Medic forced into the front line will not perform as intended merely because the Focus Tree changed.
